Cake & Eat it too! š°
Hi All!
Letās talk about cake babyā¦.. A wedding cake might be just as important to a couple as the bride's dress. Newlyweds couples didnāt always end their big day with confections covered in frosting & cake toppers though. The wedding cake tradition started with a less than grand semi-sweet origin.
Wedding cakes have their roots in Ancient Rome, when marriage ceremonies ended with a scone-like cake broken over the brideās head for luck and fertility. The new husband and wife would eat a few crumbs together as one of their first unified acts as a married couple.
The first known wedding confection was provided by Brideās Pye, a 1685 recipe. This elegant dish featured a pastry crust filled with various animals, such as oysters and lamb testicles. Yuck! š The trend continued when wedding cakes were replaced by bridal pies. In most homes, two pastry crusts were used to make a sandwich then sprinkled with sugar.
When refined sugar started getting more common and cheaper in England, a bright white icing became the topping of choice at weddings. For one thing, a pure white symbolized the brideās virginity, but it also was a show of wealth. Tiered cakes were first made in the 18th century. According to legend, a Londoner fell in love with his boss's daughter and wanted to impress her with an elaborate cake. He decided to mimic the shape of the church they would later be married in. Wow! What a great origin storyā¦ from scone- a meat pie to a tier confectionā¦ glad traditions get modernized. āŗļø
